Wet Pipe Sprinkler System
Wet pipe commercial sprinkler systems are the most common type of sprinkler system found in commercial buildings. In this system, the pipes are constantly filled with water. Once a fire triggers a sprinkler head, water immediately discharges to douse the fire. Wet pipe systems are the most reliable and cost-effective systems. If you need a brand new sprinkler system, a wet pipe system would be the best choice. However, in order for a wet pipe system to be effective, the temperature of the building must not fall below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, or else the water will freeze inside the pipes.
Dry Pipe Sprinkler System
Instead of having pressurized water inside the entire sprinkler system, dry pipe sprinkler systems are only filled with air or nitrogen, and the water is stored behind a dry pipe valve. When a fire triggers a sprinkler, water is released into the piping system to flood the fire. Dry pipe systems work well in spaces with low or freezing temperatures. This type of fire sprinkler system has a fast opening tool to get rid of the air and speed up the water flow. However, they do come with increased maintenance costs and may have a delay of up to 60 seconds until water is released.
Preaction Sprinkler System
Similar to dry pipe systems, a preaction sprinkler system is filled with air, and water is allowed to flow through when a sprinkler head is activated. Preaction systems are designed to prevent accidental activation of the sprinklers. In order for the valve to open, a detected fire must trigger the preaction valve. Then each fire sprinkler head is opened individually. These systems work best in spaces with sensitive equipment or costly materials, such as data centers or libraries.
Foam Water Sprinkler System
Water is most commonly used in commercial sprinkler systems because of its reliability and simplicity. However, there are some instances where water is not the best choice. A foam water system sprays a mixture of water and a foam concentrate that flows through the pipe to extinguish the fire. Foam is necessary when putting out flammable solvent fires like gas or alcohol. This type of system works best in kitchen or automotive environments.
