Whether you are looking to protect your family or your employees, always be on the lookout for possible fire hazards. A fire can break out at any time, and even though there are many causes or sources, all of them are dangerous. So, make sure to ensure fire prevention in the workplace and at home with the following tips.
Address Electrical Issues
Extension cords were designed to be temporary solutions, not permanent. Relying on extension cords for too long, whether in a home or office, may lead to worn-down wiring. Unfortunately, worn-out wiring can expose their wires and be a safety hazard, resulting in an electrical fire.
Inspect Your Smoke Detectors
Another fire prevention tip is to inspect your smoke detectors to ensure they are functional. You should also be sure to install carbon monoxide detectors—even though smoke is easy to detect, carbon monoxide is not. In addition, some smoke detectors come with a sensor for detecting carbon dioxide, too.
Despite the sensors they might have, the detectors must be mounted in a particular place—either on the ceiling or on the wall close to the ceiling—the gap should only be four inches, at most. In homes, there should be one smoke detector in every room, in the hallway, and at the top of any staircases.
Keep a Fire Extinguisher in Handy
Fire extinguishers are excellent tools for combating minor fires and discouraging their spread. If you are standing somewhere safe and know what to do, your chances of deterring a fire before it goes out of control are much higher. If you have an old fire extinguisher, use a neutralized cleaning substance to eliminate the leftover residue.
Have an Evacuation Plan
Evacuation plans and fire drills are vital for fire prevention and protection protocols. For instance, help guide your employees on what to do in case of a fire and show them where their exits are. They should also know where to gather once they are outside of the workplace building. At home, parents should educate their children on how to get out and where to meet once they have reached safety.
